about
The name “ansun” /æn sʌn/ あんさん combines the indefinite article “an” and the word “sun,” evoking the warm glow of gold often seen in our jewelry. It reflects our aim to be unique and have a meaningful presence.
ansun is a Brooklyn-based shop that features handcrafted jewelry and unusual objects, showcasing the work of Japanese artists as well as creators inspired by the essence of Japan. The heart of ansun is a bridge built through cross-cultural connection, craftsmanship and care.
ansun is also one of my nicknames derived from my family name — a tribute and expression of gratitude to those who came before me. About 150 years ago, my family ran a silk trading company called Anzai Shoten 安西商店 at the Port of Yokohama in Japan. Their silk spun by Japanese artisans was exported and New York was one of main ports among other major cities. Having moved from my hometown Tokyo to my current home base Brooklyn and immersed myself in a completely different culture and environment, I find inspiration and respect in my ancestors who once built bridges between cultures through their work.
At ansun, each piece is made to be lived with. Jewelry and objects aren’t items to consume; they become companions that add meaning and depth to everyday life. They become part of your story, evolving gracefully with you through thoughtful aftercare.
