A Visit to Chika Higashi | Artist of Life in the Yatsugatake Highlands
It was 15 years ago in the fall that I first met Chika Higashi, an artist through our mutual friend. Back then, I was still living in Tokyo, and it just so happened that we were both in New York at the same time. We spent a day gallery-hopping in Chelsea, along with her eldest daughter, who was still very little at the time. I still occasionally recall the vivid and warm moments we shared, especially seeing Do Ho Suh’s work together. At that time, she was running coci la elle, her one-of-a-kind umbrella brand, and I remember thinking how beautiful her umbrellas would be, dancing in the rain - even in a city like New York, where people rarely use them.
When I returned to Japan in November 2023, I visited her and her family, currently living at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains. Before my return, on the autumn equinox, we had a soft launch this website, and I knew I wanted to ask Chika to create the main visual for ansun. Her works - its colors, the lines of her brush - spoked me with endless rhythm of movements.

I'm quite talkative by nature, and conversations with Chika are endless in the best way. Whether it’s about peace or the cake I had yesterday, there’s always so much to talk about. In her atelier, surrounded by music playing from her record player, we talked about ansun, and she showed me the work she had been creating. That artwork is now on its way to ansun.
Chika asked me to send a playlist of songs I listen to. She said she would listen while she painted and created paintings using orange as a base, layered with many colors.
At the end of December, she shipped out three paintings. Enchanted by the magic of the holiday season, they wandered within the USPS system for nearly a month before finally arriving at my home in Brooklyn. Embracing the artworks in my hands, I felt even more quietly committed to nurturing ansun with love and care.
For the summer solstice this year, in celebration of our pop-up event at HIGHTIDE STORE DTLA, we turned one of the work into a postcard. Thank you, Chika!
2023年11月に日本に帰国した際に、八ヶ岳山麓に住む、生活芸術家のひがしちかを訪ねた。帰国直前の秋分の日に、ansunのウェブサイトをソフトオープンして、メインビジュアルは、ちかちゃんにお願いしたいと思っていた。ちかちゃんの絵は、色彩は、筆の線は、豊かな意志を持って自由にどこまでも踊っていく。
友人を介して、彼女に出会ったのは15年も前の秋のこと。その頃私はまだ東京に暮らしていて、ちょうどニューヨークを訪れるタイミングが同じで、チェルシーのギャラリー巡りを一緒にしたのだった。まだ小さかった、ちかちゃんの一番上の娘さんと、3人で見たDo Ho Suhと、色鮮やかで柔らかな時間を今でもたまに思い出す。当時彼女は、coci la elleという唯一無二の傘ブランドをしていて、傘を差さない街ニューヨークであっても、ちかちゃんの傘が雨に舞ったらどんなに美しいだろうと思ったのだった。
私はおしゃべりだけれど、ちかちゃんとは話が尽きない。平和についても、昨日食べたおやつについても、たくさん話したいことがある。ちかちゃんのアトリエで、レコードを聴きながら、ansunについて話して、彼女が取り組んでいた作品も見せてもらった。その作品は、もうすぐansunにも届きます。
ちかちゃんから、私が日々聴いている曲を集めたプレイリストを送って！と言われた。それを聴きながら、描いてくれるとのこと。オレンジを基調とした多色使いで、私が好きな音楽や私自身をイメージして描いてくれました。
12月の終わりに発送してくれた3つの絵たちは、ホリデーシーズンの魔法にかかって、USPS（アメリカの郵便局）内を放浪したのちに、約1ヶ月後にブルックリンの私の元へと届いた。大好きが止まないアーティストに絵を描いてもらうことが、どれほど幸せなことか。ansunを大切に育てて行きたいと、受け取った絵たちを抱きしめた。
この夏至に、HIGHTIDE STORE DTLAでのイベントにあわせて、その絵の1つをポストカードにしてもらいました。ちかちゃん、ありがとう。
